July 6, 1957 – The Day John Met Paul

54 years ago today, a most magical moment happened at a small church in Liverpool that forever changed the world. It was the day two teenagers met –  John Lennon and Paul McCartney. They were introduced by a mutual friend Ivan Vaughan at the Church fete where John’s group The Quarrymen were playing. A seismic alert went around the world so huge, it can still be felt today! We are so grateful to have had The Quarrymen to our FESTS a number of times over the years to fill in the gaps of how that moment went down. Books have been written, paintings have been commissioned, but make no mistake, it was one of the most significant moments of the 20th century. We just didn’t know about it until well after The Beatles appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964, almost 7 years later. Shown is a recently found photo from that day. It was taken by band member Rod Davis’s dad.

  1. Maybe the biggest day in modern music history. The greatest songwriting team ever was born on this day. Hey “blue shirts”- can’t wait as the ChiFest is less than 1 month away. What a first week of August- Sir Paul at old Wrigley Field for 2 sold out shows followed by 3 days of the Fest at the Hyatt O’hare. Can’t wait as I followed “Ranger Terri’s” lead and took off for the entire week from work. WOO HOO!

  2. What a day it is John and I are celebrating that day at next year’s Chicago fest for Beatles fans by recreating it I’m Paul, John’s Ivan, Hunter’s John, the Commoners are the Quarrymen.

  3. Check out the book: The Day John Met Paul, published by Penguin books. I read it on this monumental anniversary every year. It’s a wonderful recreation of the whole day, painstakingly researched. What a wonderful way to celebrate!

  4. Another great event happened that day as well, my birth! What a great way for a true Beatles’ fan to enter the world!

  5. I remember back in 1963 hearing on the news the rave about a rock group in England. Several weeks later they appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show. I’ve been taken with their music and personalities ever since then and lucky enough to have seen them perform at the August 12th 1966 afternoon show in Chicago. During those awkward and turbulent teenage years I found comfort in listening to the Beatles. They were (are) true pathfinders. Beatles Forever.

  6. I am so proud of my Welsh “cousin”, and so grateful for all the wonderful music. God bless you, Ivan, and yours, forever. All you need is love!

  7. Same day and time I was born! Turning 64 tomorrow. Will someone still feed me, will they still need me?
